Turning Social Science upside down
Successful experiment: the launch of our first Design Thinking Workshop for the senior run of International Relations Online.

The Center for Global Politics loves to experiment and try out new things. Therefore, the CGP-team launched the first Design Thinking Workshop for the senior run of the Master program International Relations Online (IRO). Design Thinking is a facilitation method which is widely used in business settings to develop creative problem solutions by working in multidisciplinary groups using a lot of colourful materials. Together with two coaches from the software giant SAP the International Relations Online team facilitated a design thinking challenge for the students during the in-house class in Berlin. This was special for all involved – it was the first design thinking workshop tackling a political question: “How can we create a way to help visitors better understand the history of the Berlin Wall?” Our students did a great job and developed creative, colourful and user-friendly ideas such as a time-line vehicle, an activity park and a dating club, in which people have to cross sector borders in order to meet each other. The Center for Global Politics looks forward to develop our concept for Design Thinking in the Social Sciences further and is excited about the workshops to come.
