How to join
The admission requirements and selection criteria are valid for both the full-time and the part-time study option. Please note that there is only a limited number of part-time study places available. Further advice regarding the pros and cons of studying IR Online part-time or full-time can be found here.
Who can study IR Online
Participants must be postgraduates, meaning that a prior university degree (B.A., M.A., Diploma, state examination, etc.) is required. Preferably this degree has been obtained in Political Sciences, Humanities, or Social Sciences, including Law and Economics. However, exceptions for applicants of other fields are possible under certain conditions. Overall, a genuine interest in international relations, the desire to enhance your knowledge of international and global politics, as well as your motivation to work in a challenging environment will be of paramount importance.
In addition, one year of relevant postgraduate work experience is required.
Participants must be fluent in English.
To successfully complete the program, access to adequate electronic equipment – in particular, internet access and a computer capable of working with multimedia course materials – is mandatory.
How to apply
All applications must be submitted online via our application software. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications sent via email or post.
Your application must include the following:
- Curriculum vitae (in English)
- Letter of motivation (up to 500 words, in English)
- Two letters of recommendation from academic and/or professional referees (preferably in English, although German will be accepted)
- Certificate of a relevant academic degree (B.A. or higher)
- Employment reference letter or other proof of postgraduate work experience of at least one year (preferably in English, although German will be accepted)
- If English is not your native language, a language certificate verifying English proficiency is required.
Please note: all documentation must be submitted with a certified translation if written in any language other than German or English. Translations and copies must be legally attested by a German diplomatic mission. To find the nearest diplomatic mission in your country, please visit the website of the German Federal Foreign Office.
Selection criteria for enrollment in the program are:
IR Online seeks qualified candidates with strong analytical skills, dedication, and a genuine interest in International Relations. For the selection process, your application is therefore evaluated within the following parameters:
1. Letter of motivation (40%)
2. Field and quality of your first university degree (30%)
3. English language competency (10%)
4. Relevance of previous professional experience (10%)
5. References (10%)
Your application will be evaluated against the background of the overall quality of all applicants. Please be aware that the competition for study places has strongly increased in recent years.
Successful candidates will be informed and offered a place in the program by June 30 at the latest.
The program will start in October each year. The application deadline is April 30 of every year. Documents unavailable at that time may be submitted by May 15.
